Johnny Rotten Interview at MAD

Updated: Apr 24, 2019

On Monday afternoon, John Rotten Lydon sat down with Gillian McCain to talk about the influence of punk on visual culture. The interview is part of the Too Fast To Live, Too Young To Die: Punk Graphics, 1976-1986 exhibit that opened April 9th at MAD (Museum of Arts and Design). The exhibition is a collection of Punk Rock graphics such as posters, album covers, flyers and other memorabilia.

Gillian McCain is an author who is best known for Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, which she co-wrote with Legs McNeil. Lydon does not make many public appearances, but made an exception because he wanted to reinforce the "true history" of punk from his perspective. During the interview they talked about the influence of punk rock in art and culture,  Lydon getting kicked out of school and his career with the Sex Pistols and Public Image Ltd.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by Dr. Martens with the support of Marian and Russell Burke, Michael and Patti Dweck, The Paulsen Family Foundation, and Flora Major for the Kutya Major Foundation. It runs through August 18th.
